Caring for residual limbs
Care of the especially sensitive and, at the same time, overburdened skin of the residual limb is particularly important. Stolperstein explains what it's all about.
The most important thing is the daily cleaning and care of the stump in order to create an optimum base. Particularly the sensitive scar areas require regular daily care.
Good experience has been gained with a pH-neutral soap, preferably unperfumed, because this avoids skin irritation and allergies. Specific care products, matched to the skin of prosthesis wearers and its special needs, are available from a surgical appliance retailer, e.g. the medi care Care Range.
A lack of care can lead to skin irritation of the stump and to pressure areas, which can result in a patient sometimes not being able or wanting to wear the prosthesis. If problems occur with the care of residual limbs or in the cleaning in the scar area, it is advisable to talk to a dermatologist or the orthopaedic technician.
